If you are looking to spark innovative ideas to stimulate your offensive mind, this is a coaching video that's made for you.

Chin-Series Breakdown, Baseline Out-of-Bounds Series

Coach Larranaga begins the video by showcasing a 3-on-3 breakdown drill designed to work on and improve the execution of his team's Chin Series actions. Coaches who are running the Chin Series, or who are considering incorporating the Chin Series into their offensive attack will see a progression of options that Larranaga uses with his team. The Hurricane's coach offers specific insight on dribble-handoff techniques within this series that will help your team score more points against any type of defense.

Next, Coach Larranaga transitions into his favorite baseline out-of-bounds series. During this portion of his Open Practice, you will receive in-depth details on five base plays that Larranaga runs. He also provides counters to run off the plays that his team is practicing.

These plays are all taught and run specifically from a 5-on-0 practice setting, so you can gain insight and learn about the installation phase of this series.

Warmup Drills, Half-Court Offense

Next, Coach Larranaga showcases two transition drills that he regularly utilizes in practice to build his transition offense. The first one, a drill he calls the 'Celtic Drill' is a 4-on-0 warm-up drill that forces your team into running lanes and getting layups. It is a drill that also serves as a great conditioner, as well as transition offense teacher.

The '30-Second Cycle Drill'is a drill designed to get your team into shape. Your players will understand the level of conditioning both mentally and physically that it takes to get five layups from your secondary break within a 30-second time allotment.

Coach Larranaga then provides an up close look at a 4-on-0 progression drill he calls the 'OKC Drill,' which is a drill he utilizes to build offensive concepts within his ball-screen motion offense.

In the 'OKC Drill,' Coach Larranaga showcases three variations, showcased to give you an understanding of how you can use it to prepare your players to attack any ball-screen defense you may see.

The video culminates with Coach Larranaga putting in his Chin Series and Zone offensive concepts. In this segment, the Hurricanes coach places his team into competitive 5-on-5 situations to utilize the concepts presented earlier in the video and show them how they work against a live defense.

Watching these 5-on-5 scenarios helps you understand why Larranaga's teams are some of the most efficient offensive teams in all of Division 1 basketball.

This is an excellent and highly valuable Open Practice instructional video that provides terrific coaching information and Coach Larranaga offers real-world basketball strategies that you'll be able to use in your own team's next practice.

Shooting Drills Featuring 'Multitasking Behaviors'

Coach Smart shares his favorite shooting drills designed to push the players' conditioning with valuable repetitions of game-speed shots. As players demonstrate drill, Smart points out how he also looks for opportunities to incorporate 'multitasking behaviors within each drill in practice. As an example, the shooting drills demonstrated are also 'communication drills' and designed with components that serve to help establish leadership skills, as well as include several key defensive concepts. Each multitasking aspect of the drill is as important as the next, and when run correctly, these concepts work together to make his practices higher energy while also an effective use of time.

The game of basketball is becoming positionless at all levels. Devising an offensive system to take advantage of the new trends and adapt it to your players is a challenge of every coach.

In this video, Coach Jon Coffman takes you through his Paint Touch Motion offense; you will get:

  • On-court breakdown
  • Transition ball screen principles
  • Dribble penetration reads and options

This offense has principles that will help you as you modernize and adapt your offense for the modern game!

Transition Ball Screens

Coach Coffman stresses the importance of being aggressive in all phases of offense and searching for the best shot and best advantage as they present themselves. In the opening segment of the on-court presentation, Coffman takes you through different drag and early ball screen scenarios.

Coach Coffman teaches his players to "attack the tag" when running a ball screen and breaks down each option and way to do so. Off ball movement is an important aspect of an attacking ball screen offense.

Coach Coffman allows his players to use several different actions while playing off the ball, including using the flare screen. On empty side ball screens, often you will have a side of three that forms. Coach Coffman provides several solutions on how to work through this while putting pressure on the help defense.

Paint Touch Motion

After showing the transition phase of their offensive attack, you will then see how it simply flows into their Paint Touch Motion Offense. The main component is attacking the paint and creating double gaps for perimeter penetration. You will see how he teaches passing and cutting to open driving lanes for ball handlers. For example, the wing clip cut will take the defense out of the way to create gaps on the wing for drives into the heart of the defense.

Many times, players get into the paint and struggle not knowing the options that they have just created. Coffman shares the different teaching techniques and cue words they use to get players comfortable with playing off two feet in the paint and keep the ball moving. The "kickstand" and "ID flip" movements will keep the ball moving and keep the defense on their heels.

Utilizing the Post Player

You can't forget about the post player! Coach Coffman shows how they involve one and two posts in his offense. Ways to get the ball inside off dribble penetration and ball movement are detailed. You will also see how to incorporate reverse ducking with your post player where the ball handler reverse dribbles as the defensive momentum is moving the opposite direction. A great way to use two posts is to utilize ball screening concepts. The step up, spread, and low-ball screening actions are all explained in detail.

Get ready to increase the aggressiveness of your offense and put pressure on the rim! Even if you do not want to run a dribble penetration style offense, the teaching techniques will surely help you better coach your players to understand moving off the ball and reacting to the dribble.

3x MAC Tournament Champions (2016, 2018, 2019);
2x MAC Regular Season Champions (2018, 2019);
2013 State Class A Championship (Romulus HS, MI)

Coaches interested in learning to play at a faster pace will enjoy this video - as Alabama's Nate Oats introduces the integral components to 'Advantage Basketball'; spreading the floor, taking threes, and playing at a fast pace - a system to exploit mismatches you have over opponents and score points in bunches!Coach Oats outlines this system and with on court demonstrations, shares how you can incorporate it with your own team to win more games.

Basic Components, Drag Ball-Screen Series

Coach Oats begins by defining his Advantage Basketball system and shares how, once the advantage has been created, his team moves into their 'point-5 game.' The point-5 game means that a player has half a second to make a decision  - on what to do  - when they get the ball in their hands.

You will see Oats detail how he coaches playing 'in the flow' to take advantage of gaining possession and getting numbers. On misses and steals, he instructs players to utilize drag ball screens. On made baskets, it's all about getting into a 5-Out look and executing the offense -- including gaining an advantage by using single- and double-down screens.

Coach Oats shows his drag ball-screen action; with players spread out on the perimeter and utilizing a trailing player who runs the middle of the floor, you will see how the ball screen is used to create an advantage for the point guard against a variety of defensive ball-screen coverages.

An important teaching point comes when Coach Oats explains his preference for having the ball screener get to the lower third of defender. This forces the on-ball defender to fight over the top of the ball screen. By doing this, an advantage is created as the point guard can get downhill and attack the middle of the floor in transition.

If the defense gets two defenders on the ball, Oats explains that the offense has a 4-on-3 advantage on the back end of the play. This is illustrated in detail as Oats shows how to attack teams that like to trap ball screens.

Playing Off the Catch in Transition

If the point guard passes the ball coming off the ball screen, Coach Oats outlines how and why the remaining players on the perimeter need to know their roles and options. With an emphasis on making defenses pay for helping on drives with three-point shooting, Oats details the best options that will be available for anyone who catches a pass on the perimeter from the point guard.

One obvious option in transition is to shoot a three-point shot. Coach Oats shows how shooting the three forces opposing defenses to defend the perimeter and explains that defenders need to be ready to close out hard and how you can take advantage of that.

Coach Oats then details a second option - making 'one-more pass' when available and why it's advantageous to do so. Oats explains that once a perimeter player catches a pass in transition and draws a closeout from another perimeter player's defender, the extra-pass option is available and why it can lead to a wide-open three-point shot.

A third option is to drive to the basket against the close-out defender. This occurs when a defender closes out too hard and is so determined to prevent a three-point shot from taking place, that the drive becomes available. Off this option, Oats shows how the driver can either get a layup, dump the ball into the post, or kick out to another perimeter player for a three-point shot.

For any coach looking for a numbers advantage on offense, Coach Oats' Advantage system offers ideal options; Coach Oats' excellent breakdown of the system makes this a must-see video!

Once loose, you will see a variety of actions Houston uses within their half court offense. From Shake Shots for a throw back 3 off of a pick and roll to Pop Shots looking for the post player rolling off of the pick and roll you will learn the terminology used in today's game to go along with dynamic actions to add to your offense.

Shell Drill

A staple in everyone's practice, Shell Drill is where defensive principles are taught!

Players learn the basic movements of helpside defense. Defenses learn to become a team and play together as one.  As Coach Sampson refers to it, "Shell Drill is the Genesis of defense!"

In this practice session, you will see players actively learning how to do their job.  Beginning with simple positioning Sampson shows you how to build up to 5v5 live play all while stopping and instructing players on where they need to be.  That emphasis will help players stop Baseline drives, slot drives, and wing drives.  If your teammate gets beat, learn when and where to rotate and stunt over preventing easy paint touches.

As Sampson puts it, post players get in foul trouble when we don't rotate.  This is no ordinary Shell Drill - this Shell Drill demonstrates the complete build of Sampson's vaunted defense!

Being one of the top teams in the country year after year requires a certain level of defense and this video is where you will see how Sampson and staff emphasize rotations and helpside defense.

It's no secret why Kelvin Sampson-coached teams become among the top teams in the country year after year - it's the lock down defense -  practiced relentlessly - that makes them tough to score on!  From a simple closeout that sticks the high hand to learning how to move as a team in shell drill, Sampson's defense is superior!  In this information-packed Open Practice video, Sampson lays out the steps needed to build a top level defense.  You won't want to miss out on this detailed breakdown of how to play team defense!

Customer Review: 5 out of 5 stars

3x MVC Regular Season Champions (2017, 2018, 2019);
2x MVC Conference Champions (2017, 2018);
2017 Business Record Women of Influence Award

Oklahoma women's basketball - under the leadership of Coach Jennie Baranczyk - has become one of the premier programs in the country.  With back to back 20+ winning seasons and 2 trips to the NCAA Tournament under their belt, they are in the hunt for bigger and better things at the season's end.  This Open Practice 'inside look' into Baranczyk's program and practice session is outstanding - and it starts with the details done in the offseason!

Learning how to cut, looking at different scoring options within your offense, and knowing where your teammate is going to be are all the little things Baranczyk emphasizes in her offseason workouts.  In this open practice video, you get a front row seat into an information-loaded, summer practice session.

Shell Drill

Beginning with defensive pressure, Coach Baranczyk will take you through the details she wants her players to know when guarding the ball and protecting the post.  Working on backside exchanges, skip passes, and how to box out on the shot are just a few points of emphasis that Baranczyk focuses on.

5-0 Break

Transition offense is a way for you to beat your opponent down the floor and look to get a quick bucket in the post.  With 2 post players running the floor, you see how Oklahoma gets into their high-low motion offense right from their secondary break options.  In 2 Outlets, Baranczyk has her players go down one way and look to score then adds a second box out and transition trip.  This simulates the flow of play and gives players a chance to build rhythm in the game.

4 Line Reversals

In 4 Line Reversals, players are going through their motion offense and the actions they are looking to score on.  In this segment, players are working on their cutting in the high low motion offense.  Post players are able to work on passing from the perimeter and then diving into the paint to get a dominant score in the paint.

5v0 Silent

In this demonstration of half court offense, players are learning to cut and play off of each other as they go through actions silently in the half court.  This is an excellent drill to teach players how to read what their teammates are doing.  Players cannot talk and have to work on once the initial action breaks down what they are doing after that.  This is a great way to teach offensive flow and decision-making.

Player Development Drills

With over 45 minutes of player development drills designed to get your post player open and a quick bucket around the rim - from backdoor finishes to post seals - these drills will improve the basketball IQ of your post players and make them tough to guard in the paint.  Baranczyk jumps into the passing drills and provides passes that are both easy to catch and make your post players go get the ball so they have to work their way back into the paint and score through contact.  Using breakdown drills for the high low motion also gives your players a chance to make quick decisions and learn to read where the open players are.

5v5 Play

Putting everything together, Baranczyk has her players get up and down the floor in 5v5 play.  What separates this segment from other 5v5 plays is allowing your players to make reads within the offense.  The up and down action creates a learning environment where players are not afraid to make mistakes and look for better reads.  Coach works on teaching decision-making in live play helping players raise their basketball IQ for game day.

Offseason is where mistakes are made and learning takes place.  Being able to make decisions and reads within your offensive system creates confidence and puts players in a position to be successful.  Coach Baranczyk does an excellent job detailing and teaching players what the correct options are to look for both on the offensive and defensive end.  This Open Practice video is one you will want to add to your collection helping guide your players in their decision making.

BYU's Mark Pope's rich coaching and playing pedigree has helped shape him into one of the rising coaches in the game today. In this valuable coaching video, Pope breaks down the principles of the 'power play' concept and how learning to practice it can be a life-changing evolution for your players and program!

Coaching Background

As a player and then as an aspiring coach, Mark Pope was fortunate to have an incredibly rich stream of influential coaches who shaped his outlook and philosophies on coaching and what is valued and focused on in practices. Rick Pitino, Lynn Nance, Billy Donovan, Larry Bird, George Karl, Rick Carlisle, Mark Fox and Dave Rose all played a part in Coach Pope's development as a coach. Pope's ability to pick up valuable coaching nuggets from each coach he played for and coached with has created a thoughtful, analytical coach who focuses on practicing ways to create advantages for his team every time they take the court!

The Power Play

Coach Mark Pope has taken a hockey concept - the Power Play - and uses its principles in defining ways to create advantages for his players when they are on the floor. The energy you must focus on as a coach - and then practice to perfect - is: How can your team - through skill, scheme, ability, pace and plays 'earn' a power play?

Coach Pope talks about the 3 main principles of an effective Power Play -

  • Earning it - creating or recognizing the opportunity to attract a defender and thereby pulling a defender off of another area or player - Pope states that "If I can 'earn' a second player, someone else is open!" - . at that point, you have to 'Deliver' it to them!
  • Delivering it - Once the defender has been pulled toward you - the ability to get the ball with perfect execution to the player that has the advantage; once received - you have to 'Finish'!
  • Finishing it - You have to Finish! Pope shares several ways to get off quick, high percentage shots

Quicks

Coach Pope details Quicks - a finishing shot by your bigs that avoids confrontation, avoids turnovers, and if practiced religiously, can change your bigs' life! Quicks are clean, efficient ways to finish a power play.

Pope runs a couple of drills to demonstrate how to perfect the Quicks in practice. A pick and Roll drill shows the timing needed to execute a perfect quick. Adding a blocker and really focusing on the skill of catching are added in as well.

Quicks with Floater

Adding the guards into the equation adds another efficient, advantageous way to finish a Power Play. Pope spends time on the release, the timing and hand position to ensure proper, quick release.

Shooting

As a college coach, Coach Pope spends very little time working on shooting mechanics with his players; the arrive to his program with good shooting ability but he takes time to discuss the most important thing he is looking for in his shooters - as great shooting is essential as a part of the finish of a Power Play.

Pope's 'key' when he is watching a player shoot is the psychological 'ownership' of every shot you take. When a shooter fires a three and immediately backs off and heads back on defense, you can see the disconnect between the shooter and their shot. Pope encourages  every player 'own their shot' - and follow through and stay present in the moment of the shot.

Power Play Breakdowns

Coach Pope shows a series of 2 on 2 and then 3 on 3 breakdowns to institute an awareness and understanding of how to earn the Power Play and then how to Deliver. The earning becomes a tendency once the drill is run a few times and the delivery becomes better with practice as well. This is another moment in the session when the focus on earning, delivering, catching and then finishing all come together.

Stampedes and Maggettes

Coach Pope also shares a drill he calls Stampedes and Maggettes; Corey Maggette was a masterful NBA guard who was able to make fluid, purposeful moves that were perfect illustrations of how to earn a Power Play. The stampedes were similar in design but instead of moving toward the pass, they were away from the pass.

The end result is a fluid, moving action that creates excellent Power Play opportunities.

Transition

Transition is a Power Play-rich time on the court where advantages present themself regularly. Coach Pope sets up a couple of drills that will help you run your team in game-speed drills that allow them to work to earn the Power Play and help you to keep focusing on opportunity creation where there are no contested shots.

Ball Screen

Coach Pope reviews priorities when you are setting ball screens as it relates to Power Play.  The key point in setting a purposeful ball screen is to force the defender to go over the screen and also, to focus on buying space and time. These keys will help your ball handler earn the Power Play and the play that unfolds is one with uncontested, high percentage shots.

Power Play is a hockey term in its origin but can so easily be used and applied to basketball. Coach Mark Pope has created an entire way of thinking, in pieces, that with practice and application in your program, can facilitate a team of players with superior basketball IQ as it relates to spacing, creating opportunities and finding uncontested, high percentage shots.

Here's a glimpse of what you will learn, what Coach May reinforces and some of the great coaching ideas, pearls of wisdom and observations you will be able to immerse yourself in - for your own program - with this Open Practice video:

  • Let your players play through mistakes - It allows the players to talk and work things out!
  • Teach disadvantage situations for the defense - as defenses will often have to guard with the numbers being in the offense's favor.
  • Breakdown and teach offensive basics - taking an offense and breaking it into its parts before building it back up is proven to be the best way to teach offense!
  • A great passing drill - 'Bocce passing' is a drill working on passing, driving, relocating and delivering a good pass to a teammate  - figuring out angles to pass to and pivoting to move defenders and create openings!
  • 2 v 1 shooting - Defense starts on block, offense is in the corner and slot receives a pass then has to make a decision to shoot, drive or pass  - working on reading the defense! Love this shooting drill because it puts decision making pressure on it!  Offense receives the ball in the slot, the defender is closing out from the block to force a quick decision/read from the offensive team. Competitive between teams with consequences for the losing team.
  • 5 v 0, 5 v 5 - 5 v 0 transition to work on different sets -  if you don't get anything out of the primary break, then going 5 v 5 full court to run those sets against defense - to allow players to learn how to read and what to read during the game!
  • Advantage/Disadvantage Drill - A 4 v 3 and a 5 v 5 . send defense to half court scramble drill, offensively looking to use the advantage to create open shots and high percentage plays, defensively looking to being able to handle the disadvantage to get the offense to have a bad possession through communicating, anticipating, and understanding where the weakness and how to scramble effectively.
  • 3 Minute/2 Minute Games - Be able to play with time and score  - and learn how to get good positions offensively  - and . to learn to get stops defensively -  with losers having consequences for losing  . always making sure his team is competing!

Watching Coach May 'coach' his team is, in itself, the beauty and value found in this Open Practice video! Dusty May exudes great energy and passion in his coaching and guess what? - his players give great energy the entire practice! May coaches with passion. You will definitely use some of the drills and sets shared here in your practices. Make the decision today to invigorate your practice sessions by adding some energy and great concepts found in this 5 star instructional video!

Up-tempo pace of play puts pressure on your opponent from the minute you score your first bucket to inbounding the ball after a score. Tobin Anderson took advantage of this style of play at Fairleigh-Dickinson University in 2023 when his #16 seeded team became only the second #16 in history to take down the #1 seed in the first round. As evidenced in the 2023 NCAA tournament and throughout his career, Coach Anderson is a master at making his opponents abandon their game plan to play your style of play. In this Open Practice series of 2 Iona practices, Coach Anderson shows you how to teach an up-tempo style of play using competitive game play and drills.

Open Practice - Session 1

In practice session 1, Coach Anderson jumps right into competitive play. From competing in warmup drills to ending practice with 5v5 play in the half court, you will love the culture that pushes players to be their best.

In 3v0 Coach Anderson breaks down the actions his players are looking to achieve in the half court.  Using flare and slip cuts, players can create a scoring opportunity for your best 3 point shooter or a slip for your strong post. Coming off of ball screen action, your players will learn to hit the shake player or play filling behind or get a post touch.

In 3v2 with a chaser, the trail defender puts pressure on the offense to get a quick score and do so by throwing the ball ahead. This helps simulate fastbreak scenarios and puts an emphasis on transition offense with a quick score.

In 5v4 disadvantage, players fly around the court looking to get a stop and transition into offense.  With the turnover and stop, your offense turns to full court pressure defense and learns to play at a high tempo. Being able to flip from offense to defense is a major point of emphasis in every practice!

Continuing to build up with game play, players learn to pressure right away in the full court in 5v5 Tip and Press.  This is a great drill to make players learn how to create a pressure mentality and up tempo style of play. This puts an emphasis on how to quickly make the switch from a score to getting right into your run and jump press.

Open Practice - Session 2

Practice session 2 begins with 2v0 Action work.  In Zoom Action, players will learn how to master the dribble handoff scenario and read what to do when the defense stays and leaves you to throw out of the handoff or when to attack the rim.  With Grenade action - players attack the rim, look for the kickback or get a post touch.  In Flare action, players are working the slip and the throwback option.

Building solid ball handlers starts with learning how to get a feel for the ball.  Coach Anderson has players do stationary ball handling work every practice.  These drills are simple and designed to help push your players out of their comfort zone as they use two basketballs.

1v1 Pivot and Sweep,  players are learning to create space and protect the ball at the same time; when the offense realizes they are in charge, they know anything is possible!

In 3v3 full court, players are using their actions and up-tempo style to help teach you spacing on the floor and how to create a competitive atmosphere. This is great for your smart, younger players to learn how to observe how quickly the game can move.  All of these drills are building up to 5v5 scenario play where Coach Anderson will showcase the intensity of his practices and style of play.

In Iowa, the defense will have a fast Run and Jump full court pressure.  This forces teams to constantly be thinking about when you are going to trap and when you are going to just ride the defender out into the half court.

Coach Anderson loves to train his teams to play fast. He loves to push the pace and be an up-tempo program. Players love this style of play as well, but it takes a toll.  You have to be prepared to play and to do this you have to constantly play this way in practice.

In this video, Coach Tobin Anderson uses his Open Practice sessions to showcase how he is able to get the most out of his players in effort and emphasizes why this up-tempo style of play can create a formidable, relentless team in the season ahead!

.742 win percentage in MEAC (5th in the nation among coaches with at least 100 games coached);

Good match-up zone defense gives teams lots of trouble - regardless of whether they run man-to-man offenses or use zone actions. Robert Jones, the head coach at Norfolk State University, has garnered a lot of success employing a 3-2 Matchup Zone that smothers opponents and keeps them off-balance and guessing.

By deploying a defense that incorporates Pack Line principles, opponents facing Coach Jones' defense often struggle to attack the paint with a post feed or get into gaps with a drive.In this highly valuable instructional video, Coach Jones unveils the ins and outs of his 3-2 Match-Up Zone and provides terrific build-up drills to help you install the defense while giving your players ample reps at protecting the paint.

Match-Up Zone Principles, Responsibilities & Offensive Actions

Understanding the unique nature of a match-up zone defense's principles and the individual player responsibilities within it, is the first step toward building an impenetrable zone defense. Coach Jones begins by walking you through each players' responsibility and has them practice pointing at who they are guarding, communicating who they have to teammates, and understanding whose responsibility it is to guard the ball depending upon where it is on the court. This is a valuable portion of Coach Jones' on-the-court lesson and imperative toward helping you build a zone defense that will be tough to score on.

After providing an understanding of the basics, Jones walks you through how to defend popular offensive actions that teams will try to use against your zone.

From defending ball screens and keeping the paint locked down, Coach Jones details the importance of having the top of the zone cover defensively while using pack-line defense principles to create a smothering, hard-to-identify defense.

Against a baseline runner, Jones highlights how your players must point and cover the runner with the bottom part of the zone as everyone else rotates to cover the paint, while preventing any easy entry passes into the post.Against X action, Coach Jones outlines how the top part of your zone must work to cover post players who are trying to slip into gaps.

These defending actions will prevent teams from taking advantage against the weak areas of the zone and Jones explains things in a way that makes it easy to combine the match-up zone defense with Pack Line principles.

Match-Up Zone Defense Build-Up Drills

To help implement, teach and build-up your Match-Up Zone, Coach Jones provides break-down drills that utilize and showcase pack-line principles. In 2-on-2 Drill, players work on sprinting and morphing from on-the-ball pressure to pack-line principles.

Building up to a 3-on-3 drill, Jones has the on-the-court players work on defending cutters and communicating - which is a great example of using a build-up drill that teaches the defense, while also working on getting your defenders to point, communicate and maintain their responsibility when guarding the ball.

Coach Jones continues to showcase build-up drills working toward a 5-on-5 Drill that emphasizes the importance of defenders' practicing their pack-line principles and applying them within the match-up zone defense.

Coach Jones has built Norfolk State into a top mid-major program with an emphasis on always playing tenacious, tough-minded defense. His teams have had some of the most memorable upsets in the NCAA Tournament in recent years. All of this has been accomplished through playing a hard-to-identify, Pack Line defense that incorporates a 3-2 matchup zone.

By combining the two best of these two defensive worlds, you'll learn how to build and teach a smothering defensive system that causes opposing teams to struggle to score from the perimeter, while simultaneously preventing them from getting good-look paint touches against your zone defense. This is a must-see defensive video demonstration and a masterclass on teaching a complex-looking system that's actually easy to implement and understand.

Customer Review: 5 Out of 5 Stars. 'Coach Jones uses excellent teaching points to describe how you can use Pack Line principles in the match-up zone. His build up drills are also great for teaching players how to communicate and where to be in the zone!'

his No.(14) retired by Portland Trail Blazers

Introduction to the Pick & Roll (PNR)
  • The PNR has and continues to be a staple play for NBA teams since the league began.
  • When a PNR is run properly your team is guaranteed to get a good shot.
  • Able to run various types of PNR sets from various spots, involving various numbers of players being involved in the initial screening action

Coach Lionel Hollins has been a part of the NBA either as a player or coach since 1975. During that time, he has been coached by or has coached with some of the all-time NBA legends. These experiences are evident in this video with the numerous versions of the PNR shown. Coach Hollins demonstrates that where the PNR is run will determine what options you will have. Coach provides not only the options but the counters for each PNR action.

Offensive Pick & Roll Actions/Sets

In this segment 13 variations are presented. These sets can utilize dribble hands off, double screens, ghost screens, and back screens. Common spots on the floor these sets are run from are the elbows, top of the 3-point line, and of course the wing. Where you run it from may determine how the defense needs to guard it and therefore who should be getting a shot. Double Stack Drag is an excellent set for getting the big shot or Regular Stack to get a great shot for the shooter or a lob for the big based on how the defense responds to the initial screen. Three Side is a set used to prevent the defense from bringing help. Coach Hollins believes "V" is the toughest of the actions/sets to defend if you have a good passing guard. Coach explains through each set  - such as: what to do if the defense switches everything or how to deal with teams that use drop coverage. At the end of the game Target is a great PNR to run to ensure your best player has the other team's weakest defender guarding them.

Guarding the Pick and Roll

Since the PNR is so common it is important not only for your team to be able to run it, but they should know how to try to defend it or make it more difficult. In this segment Coach Hollins explains situations where the player guarding the ball must position themselves, how to chase hard off a screen, and the technique of the rear contest. For the defender guarding the screener he explains ways they need to show, how to stunt, and when an X switch may be needed. If you are forced to switch, he demonstrates how to do a Veer Switch which allows the original defender to get back to the ball handler they were originally guarding when the pick and roll started.

How to Defeat a Team That Always Switches

As a terrific bonus segment Coach Hollins shows how the Denver Nuggets made the Miami Heat pay for switching on every screen!

This is an excellent video that provides not only several different types of PNRs your team can run but also adds depth to each type allowing you to teach your team how to counter any defensive action.

The best part is how easy it is to add whatever one you want based on the players you have. This is easily one of the best videos for coaches that value what the PNR brings to the game!

University of Wisconsin-Platteville Assistant Coach from 1993 to 1999;

Limiting turnovers and developing players who can efficiently execute your team's offense in both full-court and half-court settings goes a long way toward helping you become a consistently winning program that's tough to beat.

Wisconsin's Greg Gard has developed a well-earned reputation for producing some of the most fundamentally strong players in all of college basketball. The two-time Big Ten champion head coach is a firm believer in building a coaching process that develops players who are confident, strong with the basketball and are knowledgeable on the offensive end.

In this instructional coaching video with on-the-court demonstrations, Coach Gard unveils a critical portion of the teaching process he has created for utilizing fundamental drills that you can use daily to build strong and confident offensive players who can execute any offense.

Ball-Handling Drills

Stressing the importance of getting to the rim in any offense, Coach Gard begins by showcasing 'attacking the basket' drills he uses, starting with the '2-on-0 Partner-Passing Drill'; this drill emphasizes and teaches players how to get to two feet with a jump stop to deliver a solid, on-target pass. As players pick up their dribble, an emphasis is placed on keeping the elbows out, staying square to the rim and ripping the basketball through to keep a defender from getting their hands in the ball-handler's space.

Coach Gard shows how you can do this drill to work on chest passes, bounce passes and overhead passes. This is also a great drill to teach cutting and spacing, as well as getting players to work on making proper v-cuts to help them get open.

In a drill called the, 'Dribble-At Drill,' Coach Gard shows how players can learn to back-cut and use the move to open up a backdoor play. In this drill, players are taught how to make decisions based on what the defender is giving them, and if they are using either overplay or bump technique to defend a dribble handoff. This is a terrific drill that teaches players how to move without the basketball - a key component to help improve your team's half-court offense and take it to the next level.

Passing-and-Catching Drills

Passing is one of the lost arts in today's game. Coach Gard showcases several simple and effective passing drills that emphasize showing hand targets, utilizing ball fakes and playing off of two feet. These simple, yet critically important offensive techniques, teach your players how to be strong with the basketball and consistently deliver solid, on-target passes.

In the '3-Line, Straight Drill,' which is a variant of the traditional 3-man weave drill, players have to catch a pass in their lane and come to a jump stop while delivering another pass up the court and working toward a layup. Coach Gard stresses that players must maintain 'eyes to the rim' and use different types of passes depending on how many passes they can use to successfully get down court.

Next, Coach Gard shows off his 'Full-Court Passing Drill,' in which players demonstrate all the different types of passes they can use to make it successfully down court in a full-court setting. Once a full-court trip is successfully completed, players must speed dribble the length of the court and restart the drill.

As they perform the 'Full-Court Passing Drill,' players must call out the name of who they are passing to, while getting square to the rim each time and using ball fakes to deliver a strong pass. This excellent, challenging drill teaches players to catch passes while remaining strong with the ball as they deliver confident passes to their teammates.

Gard also showcases one of his favorite passing drills, with the '4-Corner Passing Drill.'  In this drill, players must communicate who they are passing to and follow their pass. They must sprint while using a jump stop and execute reverse-pivot to hand the ball off to the next player in line. This is a highly effective drill that you have players perform in a half-court setting and utilizes the lane line to teach passing, pivots and staying strong with the basketball.

Building a fundamental player is what every coach aspires to do. Fundamentally strong players transform any offense - regardless of the offense you run - into a strong and efficient offensive attack that keeps your team's turnovers to a minimum. After running the drills shown by Coach Gard in this video, your players feel confident that they can handle any type of defensive pressure that is thrown their way.

This is a must-watch video for coaches at all levels of competition. Coach Gard's demonstrations and coaching points-of-emphasis remain simple, effective and easy to teach.  The drills shown are ideal for everyday use and serve perfectly as quick, significantly purposeful habit-building tools that you can incorporate into your own system for player improvement.

Customer Review: 5 Out of 5 Stars. 'This is a valuable coaching video! It's filled with solid, fundamental drills. Coach Gard does a great job of emphasizing all the little things he does as a coach to help build a more complete and fundamentally sound basketball player.'

Assistant coach for Mike Davis at UAB from 2007 to 2009;
at Indiana (his alma mater) - was student manager for Bob Knight from (1996 - 2000)

After leading his Florida Atlantic (FAU) Owls to a historic run to the 2023 Final Four, Coach Dusty May delivers with an excellent deep dive coaching session on his effective ball screen offense.  You will learn May's philosophy for structuring offense on makes and misses, how to open space with intelligent cutting, tailoring your offense to the strengths of your players, solutions for various defensive coverages and more!

In this excellent Ball Screen video, you will see how he coaches his players to play fast on missed shots and turnovers by getting insights on his principles to transition and drag ball screen options.

You will also learn how simple play calls and giving your players the freedom to play randomly through spacing and cutting concepts can get you paint touches within the first seven seconds.  Coach May shows how the '45' and 'Clide' (cut and slide) cuts can open space for your ball handler to attack.  'Drag Pop' is another simple adjustment that can create open shots for your screener or flow into secondary actions such as dribble pitches.  'Drag Twist' is an effective solution that will confuse any defensive coverage you will encounter.

Coach May also breaks down the Dragon secondary offense that is used when facing a more organized defense after made baskets.  This play sequences multiple actions that will scramble the defense within just the first few seconds of the possession.  Dragon Flash gives you a simple way to flow into more off-ball screening action.  Dragon Get is another easy adjustment that will free shooters with follow up screens after the ball screen.  You will also get ideas for how to change up the pick and roll to match the skillsets of your screeners.

The offensive options multiply when you see how Coach May adjusts with new solutions for different defensive coverages.  Hit defenders going under the ball screen a second time with the Flip action!  Learn how to punish teams that are trying to force you to the side by playing through the short roll or changing the angle of the screen!

Coach May demonstrates an effective play for your best shooter against Ice coverage.  You will also see how Coach May changes floor spacing to attack switching defenses.  This strategy will help you exploit perimeter mismatches with the gaps it creates.  May also shows how the ball handler and screener need to adjust their own based on the aggressiveness of the ball screen coverage.  These new ideas are going to help your players always make the defense look bad no matter what strategy they try to use.

This video is going to help any coach no matter whether you are looking for an entirely new offensive system or just looking for new ideas to tweak what you already do.  There is something for everyone who runs ball screens!

Customer Review: 5 Out of 5 Stars!

"This video is headed for the 'Championship Productions' video 'Hall of Fame'! One of , if not the best, ball screen videos I have ever learned from!"

3x Atlanta Journal-Constitution GA Class 4A Coach of the Year

In high school basketball, there are few coaches who have accomplished more than Sharman White nationally. The head coach at Pace Academy in Atlanta, GA, has been a successful coach at every level, including at the highest level with USA Basketball and helping to bring in 3 Gold Medals to date.

With a reputation for being cool, calm and drawing up successful strategies while under the pressure of late-game situations, Coach White uses this outstanding basketball coaching video to pull back the curtain and showcase the details of his winning approach to end-of-game (EOGs) and after time-outs (ATOs) situations.

In this video, Coach White draws out and demonstrates some of his favorite sets in an easy-to-follow, 5-on-5 half-court setting.

End-of-Game Philosophy

As a coach, it's a coach's job to put players in positions to be successful. Coach White explains that knowing the spots and situations where your players are comfortable scoring helps to expand your players' ability to win late in games.

White outlines the importance of preparing your players for everything that can happen. Coach White shares his plan for preparation and how to modify practices in ways that will make your players feel comfortable and confident when the game is on the line.

Sharing examples, Coach White explains how to set up different situations in practice to help your players to always be aware of the time, score and situations they are in. By practicing game situations every day, you'll learn how to have your players ready for adjustments and twists that come their way.

ATOs (After Time Outs)

Coach White provides game-winning plays for all ATO situations - from sideline out-of-bounds plays (SLOBs) to half-court sets, to baseline out-of-bounds plays (BLOBs) - running examples of each with on-the-court demonstrations.

In a play called 'Cleveland,' Coach White demonstrates how your point guard can use a dribble handoff followed by a pin-down screen to create a scoring opportunity for your best shooter or a slip for your post player to score at the rim.Coach White also shows off 'Double,' a play in which your team can get an open three-point shot in the corner using Iverson Action or getting a slip from your post player after setting a double-screen against the outside of the zone.

The half-court play called 'Florida' helps your point guard get a late flat-ball screen to attack downhill.

Using baseline out of bounds sets, Coach White demonstrates several game-tested plays that he's had success with in a wide-array of situations, including 'Circle 1' and 'Circle 2' to show two of his favorite sets and other wrinkles he runs out of each. These sets will help your players feel confident they can score against any defense.

EOG Sets (End of Game)

From a full-court set to quick-hitting actions late in the game, Coach White helps prepare your players for any time and score situation. In a play called 'Detroit,' the coach demonstrates how having a short clock actually allows you to use misdirection - with your shooting guard setting a screen for the point guard coming off and looking for a quick shot at the top of the key.

Coach White demonstrates a home-run play called 'Long' where your shooting guard comes off of a screen, hits the post player flashing, who then hits a wing for an open 3-point shot.

'Cardinal' is a play shown from a box setup with 5-seconds left on the clock. White details how to use your post players to set a double-screen for your shooting guard, who catches and attacks the rim as the ball-side of the court clears out.

Preparing your players for all situations makes them confident for any situation. Knowing when and where to get your players the ball for a scoring opportunity, is a coaching tactic that builds trust in your players and helps to take your program to new heights.

Coach White has a playbook full of game-winning ATO and EOG sets. In this jam-packed, highly valuable video, Coach White opens his playbook and diagrams his favorites - all designed to give your team an advantage late in the game. This is a must-watch video for coaches at all levels of competition.

Coach Rating: 5 Out of 5 Stars. 'This is an excellent excellent video! Coach White diagrams multiple sets that you can use either after a timeout or at the end of a game. I especially love how coach first draws up the play with the players, without the defense knowing, and then runs each set, which gives you a full read of the play!

Skill Development - the Core of Your Offense Effectiveness

Coach Sean Miller focuses on skill development and his offensive philosophy of wanting to play faster. He believes that the best way to do that is by playing through concepts and having more of a flowing offense where the number of sets or plays that are called is limited.

Miller spends a large portion of time developing skills; things as basic as what pivot to use, catching, and being in a triple threat position. Focus is placed on teaching players how to get open, driving and attacking the basket.

The importance of making your breakdown drills simulate what will happen in an actual game is reiterated over and over. Coach Miller also focuses on: playing off of two feet, reversing the ball quickly and completing great passes.

Pick and Roll Development

Coach Miller reviews how to set screens, cutting with a purpose and being in a good position to set the screen. Miller makes a critically important point - that you must set a screen so that a defender can't go under the screen! Miller then has the players demonstrate different ways to get into the pick and roll action.

Coach Miller also talks about passing and following the ball into the screen, about pitching the ball into the screen and using a dribble handoff (DHO) to set up the action; the demonstrators do an excellent job breaking down each of these actions.

Pick and Roll Offense

You will see how a Sean Miller-coached offense would attack a defense based on how the opponent was guarding the pick and roll. Coach Miller looks specifically at what to do when a team "hard hedges" or traps a pick and roll. Miller gives several breakdowns and concepts for what to do in these types of situations and also looks at how to attack a defense that switches pick and rolls  - and, how to gain advantages based on the mismatches that are created.

This video is great for teams who are trying to learn more about the pick and roll offense and how to develop players to set screens, use screens and attack offensively. You will learn multiple breakdowns and how to implement the different actions and concepts that Coach Miller introduces. The importance of building and developing a high basketball IQ skill set within their program in order to fully maximize an effective pick and roll offense is reinforced throughout.

Coach Sean Miller's expertise in purposeful skill development training and a high-functioning pick-and-roll offense make this a must-have video!

Offensive Strategy Separates Teams

Teaching your players how to play the game and react to what the defense is doing can lead to an unscoutable offense. Mark Byington is one of the best X and O coaches in the game. In this video, Coach Byington demonstrates the drills and principles in his offense that have helped him build a Top 25 program.

Principles

Using 2v0 and 3v0 setup, players are put through a series of drive and kick reactions that will build into a 5v0 alignment.  Through these drills you will teach your players how to react in a 5 out system.  Players will create advantage basketball and be able to push the ball in transition.

When you don't restrict players and let them play, your offense learns to thrive.

In the 5v0 Full Court drill, a coach will toss the ball up and whoever rebounds leads the break.  Coach Byington teaches his principles of Flood, Weak Flood, Drag, and Double Drag.

All of these options are the foundations of transition Flow Offense.

Transition Flood Options

In Flood, players fill to one side to overload the defense in transition.  This concept helps players learn to keep 12-15 feet spacing in transition and use a back screen or middle ball screen so players can attack at a 45 degree angle.

In Weak Flood, players overload one side of the floor by emptying to one side of the floor.  This concept allows the corner helper to not be there on defense.

In Drag and Double Drag, your point guard will love to attack the rim and look for a scoring opportunity with both post players either rolling or popping.  These are all great options to run off of a missed shot

Flow Game

Once your transition game has created a scoring opportunity or been shut down by the defense, you players have to be ready for the play after the play.

This is where Coach Byington starts to develop the 5 Out system in Flow Game.

Players are able to use random ball screens, dribble handoffs, ghost screen action, rip - drive and kick, or cut to the basket for open looks.

This style of play creates a lot of unpredictability for the defense to prepare to defend.  The advantage situations will create a better scoring opportunity for another teammate.  By keeping the principles simple - guard to guard pass/you exchange  - and guard to wing pass/you cut through - you can build so many scoring opportunities on either side of the floor.

By using 4 Out Shell, players can learn to use the actions and move the defense to create gaps.  Coach Byington reinforces - "Don't let the ball stick otherwise you will let the defense catch up to your action".

This offense can lead to big things and lots of points as Byington's teams have found out by averaging close to 80 points per game.

Having an offense that is uncountable and unpredictable can lead to big scoring outputs.

With numerous actions to build into your half court offense your players will love the Flow you can create.  Players will learn to play the game, react to the defense, counter their every move!  You will want to add this video to your offensive collection!

Customer Review: 5 Out 5 Stars! - "Very detailed video that breaks down the Flow Offense into easy to install options.  Players will learn to play off of each other through 2v0 and 3v0 drive and kick options. Some of the best teaching on these concepts I have seen!"

Controlling Game Speed & Tempo with 1-2-2 Press Defense (Plus, Maximizing Shell Drills)

Fordham University Head Coach;
2023 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year;
Fordham Associate Head Coach from 2021 to 2022;
Penn State Assistant Coach from 2012 to 2021;
Villanova Assistant Coach from 2010 to 2012;
Villanova Director of Basketball Operations from 2008 to 2010;
played college basketball for Fairfield

Utilizing a press defense is a way for teams to control tempo and dictate what your opponents can do on the offense. Fordham University's Keith Urgo has created a winning style of play that has helped Fordham finish with back-to-back Top-10 in the nation defensive efficiency ratings.

Through the 1-2-2 press, Coach Urgo highlights the best ways for players to learn the basic rotations to speed up a team that wants to grind out games in the half court and slow down teams that want to use their transition offense to put pressure on your team once they get the ball.

In this video, Urgo shows you proven methods for flowing into your half-court defense and influencing your opponents toward the sideline, baseline and forcing them into tough, highly contested 2-point shots.

Three-Quarter Court, 1-2-2 Press

Good pressing teams understand that it's not about forcing turnovers, but rather, the ultimate goal of a press is to force your preferred type of tempo and impose a specific pace-of-play upon your opponent. By controlling tempo through full- or three-quarter court pressure, you place your opponents in situations that they find difficult or uncomfortable.

Coach Urgo shows how can use the 1-2-2 press to speed up a slow team or slow down a fast team. This style of play is great for your program to dictate a game's tempo toward one that works in your favor.Demonstrating the drills that he uses to teach press rotations, Coach Urgo highlights several that he has found to be effective teaching tools, including a '3-on-3, Full-Court Drill,' where players must communicate with one another on who has the ball and who  is responsible for providing help. In the drill, players must fly around the court and influence the ball handler toward the sideline. With the top person in the press being one of the most important defenders, they have to take small steps towards the ball handler and big steps back to help take away any chance of getting the ball to the middle of the floor.

This style of play is perfect if you are looking to put pressure on your opponents and have it flow directly and smoothly into your half-court defense.

Shell Defense, Defensive Techniques

Being ranked in the Top-10 in the nation for defensive efficiency is no easy task. Doing it two years in a row, showcases your team's dedication and emphasis on defensive pressure. By forcing tough, highly contested 2-point shots, Urgo's teams have consistently displayed a solid half-court defense.

Coach Urgo highlights the best methods for teaching players how to 'help,' 'sink' and 'fill' to protect the paint. Using his version of the 'Shell Drill,' Urgo shares how to teach  'help,' 'sink' and 'fill'  techniques.

Beginning with basic positioning and on-ball pressure, you'll learn teaching techniques for playing 'head and hand on the ball' defense and 'swiping up' to force opponents to feel uncomfortable and away from the basketball. Coach Urgo shows how they teach help-side defenders to learn to defend while positioned in a boxing stance and how to keep their head on a swivel, always watching both ball and man.

Learning to properly close out and influence the basketball is a daily habit for Coach Urgo and his program. Urgo shows how they emphasize and teach which hand to close out with proper footwork and how to pressure the basketball as defenders.  By forcing opponents to shoot tough, contested 2-point shots, you will stifle the best shooters and limit your opponent's scoring opportunities.

Coach Urgo has his team playing at the top of the Atlantic 10 Conference and performing as one of the best defensive teams in the country, year-in and year-out. By influencing toward the sideline and baseline, you can create a defense focused on tough, highly contested field goals. Furthermore, by combining tenacious half-court defense with a stifling 1-2-2 three-quarter court press, you'll have a tough defense to play against.

This is a must-watch defensive video for coaches at all levels. Coach Urgo presents the information in an easy-to-follow format that allows you to easily add these schemes into your own defensive system. Plus, your players will love possessing the ability to control the tempo of games and play in a style that best fits their abilities as a team.

Coach Rating: 5 Out of 5 Stars. 'This is a really thorough video that describes two different ways to use a 1-2-2 three-quarter court press. I loved the way Coach Urgo presents his half-court shell drill and the emphasis he places on influencing toward the sideline and baseline!'
